Officers responded to a call of a shooting on the 300 block of Morris Avenue Saturday afternoon, June 6, Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a release.

The victim was having trouble breathing and going in and out of consciousness when officers arrived at the scene around 2 p.m., Ambrose said.

"Come on, get in the car," one officer can be heard saying, while escorting the victim to his cruiser.

The officer then drove the victim to University Hospital, where he was in stable condition as of Monday, Ambrose said.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains at large, authorities said.

“The life-saving actions of these officers demonstrated a personal care and concern for the victim that is commendable,” Ambrose said. “I applaud the officers for taking the initiative to preserve this man’s life and to save a family from undue grief.”

“The officers went above and beyond to ensure that this victim received immediate medical attention,” Ambrose said. “This incident could have otherwise ended in a horrible tragedy.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Division's 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477).
